Roses for Us!

Happy sunday girls! Just thought I'd give us all our roses today. :) I'm happy to know we always have eachother no matter what curve ball(s) life throws our way. :)

Getting Prepared for the John Muir Trail in July!

So I discovered a list of things Iris and I will need for our 23 day nature extravaganza into the wild. The trip will be divided into 3 sections and it turns out we will be carrying about 33lbs of supplies in each section. So I wondered how much is 33 lbs? Can I do that for 10 miles 23 days in a row. Well check out fat cat...I think I could carry 33 lbs fat cat for 10 miles 23 days in a row. What do you think?? This doesn't include the weight of a tent though. The link below lists the supplies Iris and I will need for this trip:

http://www.backpack45.com/johnmuirtrail.html

The next link is our itinerary for each day of the hike. The dates need to be changed. We will start on July 7th and end around August 30th. This is a good itinerary b/c it includes the option to also climb half dome, it averages 10 miles per day, and includes 2 good resupply stops.

This is a picture of 2 people on the JMT trail. Next on the list is to create a 23 day breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu. I found some good ideas for lightweight, high calorie, yummy food from this site:

Vegetarian Chili with Garlic Bread

Okay so one of the items on my life-to-do-list is "Learn how to make 10 healthy dishes". So far I've learned how to make veggie tikka masala, roasted veggie pasta, and veggie quesadilla's. I am so happy with the vegetarian chili I made tonight! I can really taste the beans, burger crumbles, chili peppers, jalapeno peppers, celery and spices! I really enjoyed using it as a topping on my garlic bread. I have enough to feed a whole family for a week so feel free to come over and be fed! I have to admit my garlic bread is a work in progress. any suggestions on how to make restaurant quality garlic bread?? Love you guys!

Why I love Bollywood

So this video is pretty awesome--not only because of the dance moves but the camera shots are damn cool.

Regaining "badass" status

First of all, yours truly has been accepted for the position of Greenlining Institute Summer Associate!!!! Not only am I 100000 times more relieved from graduation anxiety, I am super excited for the things I'm going to be doing!! Woohoo!!! Yet, the job search continues as the program ends in mid August (I'm hoping to hear back from the Olympic committee but the chances of that are probably 1 in a billion). Until I heard from Greenlining today, I was seriously contemplating all sorts of jobs including working for Oaksterdam.

I've undertaken also a video project for the United Nations Association East Bay (dragging the rest of the Media Academy into this as well... or Joel at least) and today, besides a massive headache and a sound film quiz, I would say its been alright.
This weekend I...
1) attended my brother's "Top 8 (schools) Track Invitational" at Logan Highschool in Union City (he came in 3rd for the 200 meter) and I froze to death because of the windchill
2) did filming for the VSA (vietnamese student association) culture show. Here is a view from where I was in Zellerbach.

Here's another terrible picture from the culture show:

3) Attended my grandma's going away dinner. I'm kinda sad she's not going to stay for my graduation. She should realize that I'm the center of her universe.

As a last note, check out the new media team website: http://greenlining.org/sections/view/gma

see if you can find me. We're all pushing for a rearrangement of the pictures-- for example, moving the Beverly Hills 90210 pose picture to the top and making it bigger etc. I think Joel looks like a mime.

Adventuring through the Colorado Path in my Garden!

It is just about for sure. I am moving to Boulder, Colorado in August! I've always wanted to live there and now I'm finally checking it out! Meg put a down payment yesterday on our 3 bedroom apartment near downtown. I will sign the lease and put down my payment this week. I am stoked to live in such a beautiful place filled with mountains and seasons for a while! While I'm in Boulder I plan on doing lots of hiking, spin/dance/yoga classes, cooking, community service and most of all saving money to go to Hawaii and Alaska next summer then Nepal for 6 months in the Fall! It's scary, but I think a fun adventure through a new path in my garden!

This is one of my new housemates. Her name is Erin Costello. She went to UC Davis and will be a grad student studying creative writing! She thinks our story club is a great idea. She's done a bunch of hiking and is currently a snowboard instructor in Tahoe!

Meg is the second house mate who just graduated from law school at U of Illinois. She will also be a grad student at Boulder studying sociological and legal aspects of internet media. She seems really adventurous and a true go getter type. She was also a spin instructor in college. Right down my ally!

fpzworld takes a night to catch up at Beckett's. Okay, I'm working on my challenge, my ups for the week, downs and awkward moment...how about you guys??

El Caballo Blanco

Friday night -- two kids from the White House venture out to the White Horse

It all began with a series of uncanny events pertaining to Ben and his journey home from work. On the BART, he spotted a fellow he had played "eye games" with once before. They rode next to one another all the way to Rockridge, both to shy to make a move. Frustrated by the missed opportunity, Ben scanned the Craig's List "missed opportunities" (Puma and Yolanda have experience with that...) and low and behold, there was a post from Ben's mystery man lamenting the lack of communication on the BART ride. In response, Ben crafted a witty email informing him that he would be at the White Horse and will be looking for him...

So off we went!

Th e White Horse is located on Telegraph slightly past the Whole Foods. Being the very first gat bar in the Bay, it's really quite a historic place. The scene was uncharacteristically quiet and straight (lucky for me). Ben and I redeemed our free drink tickets complements of flashing a school ID and played a few games of pool. From there, it was to the dance floor for me. I mingled my ways through the lesbian, gay, and straight couples and eventually found myself a dancing partner to preoccupy my time.

With my blueberry stoli + 7up in hand, Ben and I transitioned to the smoking room. We met quite an interesting cast of characters including Murphy the male housewife, Lina the Swedish Lesbian, and the best friend of Lina's baby daddy.

(Photo stolen from chesternet - taken the prevous Friday at Blake's)

We ended the evening without Ben's mystery man but it didn't really matter -- we had a grand 'ol time.

The Yooj

Today after my sound film meeting, I go for a Cheeseboard run with Diana, Katelyn, and Emily. We take the 51.

And discover that the pizza of the day is zucchini, mozzarella, feta, onions, and basil pesto!

We enjoy the sunshine and eat our deliciously greasy pizza.

While proofreading my sister's essay about "Opportunity," I come across this excerpt that makes me and Laura laugh:

" Sometimes when Opportunity doesn’t shout and yell in our ears, we have to go searching for it. Some can see Opportunity hiding away in the dark dusty corner as if that corner had shining rays emitting from it, while others glance over to the area with bright lights dancing across the room, missing the obscure portions. Therefore, one must look for it, the Opportunity who can and probably will help you in the future.

Take, for example, Chester, a young person in his mid-twenties full of potential, and Melvin, a lover of Chinese food and looking for a job. Melvin moves into a new neighborhood in search for work, but he soon realizes the area is quite horrid, considering the fact that there are no Chinese restaurants around. Melvin regrets most sorrowfully for moving into the new neighborhood. However, Chester, who is also new (and quite cute, though his name is of laughable material), takes note of the fact that there are no Chinese restaurants. What can be done? Chester thinks and contemplates for a while, and being the guy with a lot of potential, comes to the conclusion that he should take advantage of this neighborhood’s situation and create his very own Chinese restaurant (maybe called “Chinese Chester”). Not only does Chester look for, and find, the opportunity hiding outside the box, but he does not lament his arrival to this new area. In addition, he’s raking in the money, whether or not the restaurant is a five star.

It's the way...In the the Bay!

So, I'd like to begin by apologizing for all the Teach for America trash-talking I've been dishing for the past few weeks. Yes, in true Zowie style, I've come to yet another realization. Even if I am slightly disgruntled with the rhetoric/administration/diversity issues in TFA, complaining about isn't gonna do shit. Instead, I should be solidifying my own thoughts and beliefs on why I want to teach in New Orleans and what I think is important -- that way, I can share them with the other TFAers to learn the most I can from them and maybe make changes in the things I see as problematic.

The Tipping Point -- Willard track tryouts. Last week's tryout fiasco really sent me to the peak of my epiphany. It's difficult for me to articulate the feeling of walking into Willard and working with the students -- but I can honestly say that it is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my life currently. I always leave Willard in such a good mood and am always looking forward to going back. Track tryouts went so well last week (BIG thanks to Coady and Gabe) and we have our first practice tomorrow. 30 sixth, seventh, and eighth grade boys comprise the Willard Track team and I'm so so so fired up about the season.

Back to my epiphany, I think working at Willard has given me a strong sense of my abilities to work with Middle Schoolers and an understanding of the personal satisfaction I can get from it. Even though I may question certain aspects of TFA, it'd be stupid for me to go into my New Orleans experience with a sour attitude. I know I'll enjoy working at a school and am confident in my desire and abilities to be effective - the Teach for America glass is now half full.

In other news...Sunday I took a walking tour of Oakland for my Environmental Design Class. It was glorious. Here are a few highlights:
Oakland Symbolic Tree -- The fabulous Mei posing oh so elegantly in front of the famous Oakland tree seen on all the logos. It's really quite magnificent (I def. had a Fifi "tree moment")

"Oaksterdam" Gift Shop -- I gawked at this place for a good ten minutes. The web site is worth checking out. I've never seen a marijuana club quite like this one
Souley Vegan -- Oakland's very own Vegan Soul Food! I know, seems a little oxymoronic, but take my word for it, it's real tasty. Mei dined on the "soul food plate" which had exceptionally amazing yams. Gabe ordered the "BBQ Tofu plate" with awesome potato salad and collard greens. I opted for the cornbread and crispy tofu. And let me tell you, I wanted seconds. I think and FPZ stop is needed sometime in the not so distant future.

The Last United Nations Film Festival Meeting

So I attended our last UN Film Festival meeting tonight at Phyllis's house (she lives literally all the way up Spruce with just a phenomenal view of the Bay) and I am glad to say that it wasn't all business. It was extremely nice to see all the members--especially Ray Couture who is a medicinal marijuana using Vietnam Vet who teaches a class in Burlingame on "Empowerment Astrology" (yes, I am still somewhat a believer) and Rita Maran, who teaches International Law at Berkeley and has authored several books pertaining to human rights and torture (I just read the book reviews on Jstor).

Rita is super cool-- she's a bleeding heart liberal but a registered Republican just so she's in touch with what tactics "the other side" is employing in hopes of winning the election. Tonight she described some hard-core right wing phone calls she received from Republican Senators (tape recordings naturally) that tried to feed the flame of possibilities for same sex marriage legislation. Rita's daughter just so happens to be in a same sex marriage. Her granddaughter is none other than model Josie Maran (from Dancing with the Stars). In any case, besides dinner being wonderful as Phyllis was kind enough to offer a home cooked meal, I always love meetings because you get to hear all the cool stories about Berkeley and Oakland back in the 60s. For instance, Phylli's husband taught Huey Newton and Bobby Seale and because of his position on the Academic Senate (that is, pertaining to the public school system in Oakland) negotiated with demands from the Black Panthers and even recalls the murder of Marcus Foster.

But I severely digress. I wanted this post to be about how I'm now going to volunteer/intern/whatever you want to call it at Human Rights Advocates an organization that Rita helped found and (as the name suggests) is dedicated to promoting and protecting international human rights. Its an NGO that is most involved at the "United Nations Commission on Human Rights and its Sub-Commission, the Commission on the Status of Women, the Commission on Sustainable Development. [They] also participate in UN Conferences, including the women's conference in Beijing, China, the racism conference in Durban, South Africa and the Conference on the rights of the child in New York, NY."

So yay for that and maybe my life will not be as wasteful as I thought it would be. On that note, I've got a paper to write.

Ohh man I know how you feel girl!

God, trying to think about what to do next is difficult huh! So many options it's hard to know which one is best! What are your thoughts for plans after the summer?? I have exhausted myself thinking all day...Boulder Colorado or San Diego?? What really helped is coming up with a PROS AND CONS LIST
Boulder, Colorado Pros: 300 sunny days a year but still get to experience seasons, lots of people my age, a wonderful roommate who wants to explore boulder with me, gyms galore with spin yoga and hip hop dance classes, nice enough restraurants to work at so can save for alaska and hawaii next summer, and plenty of community service opportunities. Cons: no beach, sun doesnt shine 24/7.

San Diego Pros: Sunny, beach, lots of people my age, lots of community service opportunities, fitness classes galore, can save for summer. Cons: Sorry Laura, I just keep hearing bad things about the people. I'm scared of going there and not being able to find down to earth people I can connect with easily.

This Pic is of Me, one of my best friends Sara from Raleigh's and another good friend Natalie last Thursday night at the Cellar in SF! We are trying to find good dancing in the city on Thursday nights! Any suggestions??

This is a pic of my best friends in the world who are my home girls and whom I truely love for being there for me. Thanks guys you were amazing friends. I needed that girls night at the Graduate.

And a pic of me and, Josh, my ex boyfriend and great friend. He lives in SF now and is in his first year of med school at UCSF. His eyes are barely open from lack of sleepy time do to a crazy 5 day 8 hour a day straight study session before his big test. Or maybe he's just happy that its finally spring break and he doesnt have to study anymore. We went to a great bar with a huge beer garden. It was wonderful meeting all his new classmates and friends!

Keeping Sane

Remember "Sarah" from Si's short story? Well yeah. I feel like her. Especially the part where the "thought" runs through her mind all the time and everyday. Except unlike Sarah I have yet to reach a conclusion and have yet to figure out what I'm going to do. No gardens for me just yet.
Tarot Cards were right. Now its all on me.

I guess this post may seem a little cryptic, but its really not.

On a side note, I don't want to graduate not because I want to stay in school but I don't think I deserve to graduate. Fuck.

Life rating at 12:45 AM: 5
Scale: 0 to 10 (10 being elated beyond what is humanly possible and 0 being akin to how one must feel as a Jew during the Holocaust)

Oh Curtis Mayfield, as cheesy as you may be, how your lyrics describe my life right now

Living the Life of a Bizibee

Now that school is over and I'm back from New Zealand I've found myself with more things on my to-do list than the white rabbit (with the clock in Alice and Wonderland) on his slow day.

First off, I plan on taking a YOGA class monday evenings, SPIN class wednesday evenings, and HIP-HOP thursday nights. I'm exploring the wide world of group fitness to see if I'd like to teach those things. So far it's 1 for 1. I went to a spin class today and hand's down could see myself teaching one of those and loving it! Exercise is so important to me and I love the way those classes push me. Plus, shit I'd get to blast my own workout mix...so awesome!

Iris and I decided a few nights ago we are going to do the JOHN MUIR TRAIL in July so I've begun the first step which is figuring out everything we will need. This is a 3 week long hike. Iris and I will be hiking 10 miles a day for 20 days! The trail starts in Yosemite and goes to the summit of Mt. Whitney. It passes through Yosemite national park, Kings canyon national park, Sequoia national park and the Devils Post Pile National Monument. The John Muir Trail follows part of the Pacific Crest trail that begins at the US Mexico Border and ends at the Canada US border. I'm beyond the point of excitement!

In other news it looks like I will prabobly be MOVING TO BEAUTIFUL COLORADO in August for the year! I'll be living with my cousin Andrea who is extremely adventurous, only a few years older, so laid back but happy go lucky like me, into community service, loves travelling and is a returned Peace Corps volunteer! She lives in a really cute house in a great location near lots of restaurants and offered me a room at a low price (400$/month)! I'm so excited to live in a big city, in such a beautiful state, and to live with her would be even more amazing. Maybe I'll get my Peace Corps experience afterall. haha...I also met an amazing girl through Craigslist who I could live with in Boulder... I've only known her a week but I feel like we're best friends already. So I've already got 2 friends there which is a great start!

In other activities I've been teaching myself to COOK, finishing my latest READ: Tale's of a Female Nomad, watching OSCAR WINNERS my latest being Dances with Wolves, hanging with FRIENDS (going out to tour SF on Friday and then out for a fun night at the bars then a b-day party on sunday and hopefully hangin out with you guys saturday!), going to meditation classes, habitat for humanity in a few weeks...the list goes on and on...

I'm finally getting a chance to explore the many paths in my garden and it feels great! While the break up with Nate is difficult each day I feel more and more like all will be okay and that it is for the best b/c I am now free to do the things that truely make me happy in life.

And.....I'm Back!

After a brief hibernation into my cave of study/spring break/study I've re-entered the blogger world. Ahhh, it feels good to be back -- the sound of my keyboard projecting letters onto blogger.com is like music to my ears.

First and foremost, I'd like to announce the beginning of baseball season -- I went to the Padre's last spring training game and we're looking strong. Our outfield's a little weak and Trevor Hoffman a little off these days, but I think we've got a good shot at the league title. My and Original LP's fantasy team (called Beat the Dodgers) is kicking ASS might I add. The overall winner gets 10 Gs -- wish me luck.

Secondly, my tennis coaching stint at Willard Middle School has come to close. But...track begins next week! Chester's boyfriend Coady is my co-coach, and thank God for that because I have no idea what to do when it comes to track matters. Like cross country, Willard will compete against other schools (which is my favorite part). Hopefully with Coady's superb coaching abilities we can take the championship just like cross country.

And speaking of Middle Schools...Teach for America is fast approaching. I've been receiving my "Pre-Insitute" training materials/sending resumes to New Orleans Middle Schools/making plane reservations. Here's how my schedule breaks down:
May 27thish - depart from Berkeley to San Diego
June 10th - depart from San Diego to New Orleans
June 15th - depart from New Orleans to Phoenix
July 19th - Original LP picks me up in Phoenix and we drive to New Orleans
July 21st - Arrive in New Orleans
August 11thish - First Day of School!
Whew, I'm revving the engines for the marathon -- Teach for America better prep for LP-Town

And on the horizon -- keep watch for the official invitation for the Puma+Zowie Cine/Spin; all I'm gonna say is that it's gonna be badass

This is the Low

Its been settled folks. Bombed my interview, the future is dim and I am going to go slit my wrists now.
